Car Rental or Shuttle Arrangements

From your arrival at Hilo International Airport in Hilo, Hawai‘i (on Hawai‘i Island or “The Big Island”) with recommended flight arrangements through Hawaiian Airlines or orbitz.com, you may either rent a car at the airport OR reserve a seat on the shuttle provided by Kilauea Military Camp.

Taxi service from the airport to Kilauea Military Camp is quite expensive and not recommended. However, if needed, information about taxi companies can be found here with the one-way estimated cost at $75 from Hilo to Volcano/KMC (not including driver gratuity).

National Park Entrance Fee

Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) is located within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. An entrance fee of $15 per vehicle or $8 per person on our shuttle will be assessed at the toll booth. The fee is good for seven days.  Please retain your receipt to re-enter park. Various National Park passes such as the Golden Eagle, Golden Age, etc. are honored.

Driving Directions to KMC

Kīlauea Military Camp (KMC), Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Hawai‘i Island

KMC is located within the “Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Entrance” between the 28 and 29 mile markers on Highway 11.

From Hilo Airport, turn left onto Hwy 11 and travel south until you reach the left turn lane after mile marker 28, at the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Entrance. It is about 28 miles from the Hilo Airport and will take about 45 minutes to an hour.

From Kona International Airport, take Hwy 19 south (which will become Hwy 11 south).  Get in the right turn lane after mile marker 29 at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Entrance. It is about 100 miles away and it will take about 2 ½ to 3 hours.

Enter the park to get to KMC.  KMC is located about 1 mile past the Kilauea Visitor Center and Steam Vents on the right side of the road. There will be a grassy front lawn and lava rock wall at the front of the camp along with a row of cottages. In the center of the row is the Headquarters/Front Desk building for check-ins.

For convenience and ease, most guests should fly into Hilo Airport.
