We invite you to contribute to the Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium (SILS) 2014 book entitled, He Waʻa Ke Kula; Na Ka ʻŌlelo E Uli (Schools are Canoes; Language Steers Them). This title, also this year’s SILS conference theme, represents the critical role schools/education plays in the perpetuation of our Native languages. Once places for forced cultural and linguistic transformation, today schools are the vessels (canoes) from which we paddle together, united in a common goal of language revitalization and advancement. Equally important, the theme reminds us that our languages and cultures continue to serve as our individual and collective strength as well as the foundation for our learning (education). It is with this collective spirit that this book aims to make the important work presented at the conference available to the attendees as well as the larger community of language revitalization scholars and advocates.
If you are interested in submitting an article for consideration, please email a 300-word abstract, along with a 150-word biosketch that includes the author(s) full name, educational institution/school affiliation, contact information (mailing address, e-mail address, and phone contact) by March 3, 2014 to both our email addresses listed below. You will be notified of acceptance by March 14, 2014.
We plan to deliver manuscripts to the publisher for production in mid-fall of 2014 with an anticipated publication date of early spring of 2015.
