In the tradition of past Catastrophic Disruption workshops, CD8 will bring together experts from around the world who study the breakup of small bodies in the Solar System.  This workshop will provide a valuable opportunity for scientists specializing in theory, numerical modeling, laboratory experiments and telescopic observations to share their recent results and discuss new ideas in a focused, yet relaxed environment.  Topics will include the internal structures of small bodies, their disruption through collisions, tidal or rotational forces, the outcomes of catastrophic breakup, including asteroid families, their size-frequency distributions and spin properties, collisional evolution, and the formation of dust.  We particularly welcome young scientists - graduate students and postdocs who can contribute fresh ideas and will carry this important field of research into the future.

CD8 will take place over four days (June 24 – 27, 2013), and will be held at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the Kohala Coast of Hawai’i, the Big Island.  To maintain the small meeting atmosphere that has made the previous CD workshops so successful, the number of participants will be capped at about 75.  There will be seven half-day sessions, and talks will be scheduled in a way that allows plenty of time for open discussion.

We will organize optional field trips to Mauna Kea, one of the best astronomical observing sites in the world, and to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, where the Kilauea volcano has been continuously active since 1983.   In addition, the 3rd Workshop on Binaries in the Solar System will take place at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel from June 30 – July 2, 2013.  This coordination between CD8 and the Binaries workshop ensures that each meeting keeps its own identity, while making it cost efficient for participants wanting to attend both workshops.
